Business food waste collection
Does your business generate food waste of any sort? Would you like to do something more environmentally friendly with it?
For the first time in Albury and Wodonga, local businesses will be able to dispose of their organic waste through a dedicated collection and processing service.
As part of Halve Waste initiatives, Veolia will collect the region’s commercial organic waste and turn it into a beneficial soil conditioner.
The idea is to use food waste to create more food while reducing the pressure on Albury’s landfill.
Halve Waste is a joint regional initiative led by AlburyCity and made up of neighbouring councils Wodonga, Greater Hume, Indigo, Federation, Towong and Alpine Shire. It aims to literally halve the amount of waste sent to landfill by 2020.
Since 2010, the amount of waste buried in the landfill has been reduced by 45 per cent, thanks to a community-wide effort to recycle and re-use thousands of tonnes of waste that would otherwise have to be buried.
AlburyCity Mayor Kevin Mack has welcomed the introduction of organic waste collection as a major step towards achieving the Halve Waste target.
“Our community has really embraced waste-wise thinking and we look forward to building on that success to ensure an even cleaner, greener Albury-Wodonga in years to come,” he said.
“By introducing the recycling of green waste from businesses, we’re removing a significant amount of organic material from the landfill chain and making an even greater difference for our local environment.”
