Mirambeena has turned 20
The Mirambeena Community Centre at North Albury is celebrating 20 years of instructing and supporting people from across the city.
Twenty years of making a difference
Mirambeena, an Aboriginal word that means ‘welcome’, officially opened in August 2003 and has helped countless people since.
With a strong focus on developing community spirit and fostering partnerships in the community, Mirambeena has provided services that range from lessons in art and craft, to support for local charities and assistance to those with disabilities.
Most recently, the team at Mirambeena has been busy helping Nepalese and African immigrants with border crossing permits as well as teaching other skills to help new arrivals cross the language barrier.
Bi-lingual workers have been employed by the Albury Wodonga Ethnic Community Council and are based at Mirambeena, the Albury LibraryMuseum and the Wodonga Library, where they are helping people to apply for border permits in Nepali, Swahii and Kinyarwanda.
The program continues until Friday 21 August.
Twenty years after Mirambeena was built with the support of local businesses and other stakeholders, the centre continues to make a difference in the lives of people needing assistance, education or companionship.
Over the years it has made a significant difference in encouraging and supporting the growth of our culturally diverse community and the team is looking forward to continuing to add layers to the border’s cultural and social fabric.
