New CCTV cameras launched in Lavington CBD

A total of 14 CCTV camera poles have been installed in and around the Lavington CBD, along Mate Street and Wagga Road, Urana and Union Roads, and the major retail centre in the Griffith Road precinct.

The cameras will provide live footage to monitors at the Albury Police Station, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

AlburyCity Council Mayor Kylie King said the installation of the new CCTV cameras further builds on Council's commitment to safety.

"Following the success of the CCTV system installed in Central Albury, the new cameras in Lavington are designed to reduce crime and ensure community members feel safe on our streets."

"This new system will add an extra layer of protection by deterring crime and giving local police a valuable tool to identify offenders."

Ms Ley said the Australian Government had allocated substantial funding to every local government area across the country to help keep economies moving during the pandemic.

“We also ask councils to use local businesses and workforces to deliver the projects where possible, ensuring the money stays close to home.”

“In Albury, that’s seen over $4.6 million go towards improving footpaths and amenities blocks, new playground equipment and lighting. and now this CCTV extension to Lavington, which is obviously a really important safety initiative for our city.”

There will be strict controls on access to the footage to protect privacy. These controls include adherence to the CCTV Code of Practice and Standard Operating Procedure, as well as a formal application process by police wishing to use the footage for investigations.

This project was funded through a $430,000 grant from the Federal Government's Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program and a $248,500 contribution from AlburyCity Council.
