GUGAA

A public art installation that acknowledges Wiradjuri Country, its people, and its history.

The “GUGAA” is a public art installation that acknowledges Wiradjuri Country, its people, and its history. Through this artwork I am also acknowledging the birth-place of my Great Grandmother. The artwork features the Wiradjuri totem of the “Gugaa” (the goanna) against a background that represents Dendroglyphs or the markings of carved trees, a key cultural symbol of the Wiradjuri. By featuring “Gawaymbanha – Welcome, Albury Airport is on Wiradjuri Country,” the language and welcome evokes an awareness when arriving for the first time and arriving back that you are now walking on Wiradjuri and delivers that message of respect and inclusivity.
