1. Check planning requirements

Confirm that your business can operate at the proposed location and complete any required planning or building approvals.

3. Meet food-safety requirements

Make sure your premises, equipment and food-handling practices comply with the Food Standards Code.

4. Arrange an inspection

Contact our Environmental Health team to arrange an inspection before handling food for sale.

Additional requirements

Some food businesses must also appoint a Food Safety Supervisor or obtain liquid trade waste approval.

Some retail, hospitality and food-service businesses must appoint a qualified Food Safety Supervisor for each premises.

You may need approval before discharging fats, oils, grease or other trade wastewater into the sewerage system.

Notify Council if your business closes, relocates, changes ownership or trading name, or opens another location.

Temporary and mobile food businesses

Different requirements apply to temporary food stalls, mobile food vendors and businesses operating at events.
